10 Things you didn't know about Krypto the Superdog

10 Facts about Krypto the Superdog

Ahead of the forthcoming Superman movie featuring Krypto the Superdog, CBB decided to find 10 incredible, fascinating facts about the Man of Steel's best friend.

10. Krypto is an important ally and loyal friend to Superman. When he's not helping his friend, he's defending the Fortress of Solitude or completing his own missions. He also helps other heroes, such as Batman.

9. Krypto had his own animated film recently - the DC League of Superpets, voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But having been around since 1955, he has appeared in many formats, in print and on screen, such as when he was in Smallville. He even had his own series, 'Krypto the Superdog', in 2005.

Krypto's first-ever appearance was in Superboy Adventure Comics #210 in 1955. Upon discovering the super dog, young Clark Kent investigates his origins and leads him to the Kryptonian rocket ship, revealing that Krypto was actually his family's pet from his home planet, Krypton.

8. Krypto's breed is unknown. The super dog's appearance has changed from a Golden Retriever and a white wolf, but has also been portrayed as a basic white dog. Despite bearing similarities to a terrier, Krypto has never been pigeonholed into an exact breed.

7. Krypto's origin story has changed many times. Originally introduced as Superman's family pet from Krypton who made his way to Earth, Krypto has also appeared from another universe, as a normal dog without powers, a false Kryptonian dog, a genetic experiment, and even a clone.

6. Just like Superman being part of the Justice League, Krypto has been a member of the Legion of Super-Pets and the Space Canine Patrol Agents (SCPA);

5. Krypto is incredibly powerful and shares many of Superman's powers and abilities. His strength is such that he is known as a formidable guardian of the Fortress of Solitude and was even able to hold his own against Supergirl and Superboy-Prime.

4. Loyal Krypto sacrificed himself in thee comic book story, 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow'. Superman's home base is breached by Kryptonite Man, so Krypto attacks the villain to save his friend and the protect the Fortress of Solitude at a cost of his own life.

3. Krypto is still a dog, despite his unique abilities, therefore requires training still. A superdog without training can be irresponsible, such as delivering lethal blows to enemies or destroying property and causing excess damage. So, Superman had to isolate Krypto in his Fortress to train him thoroughly over time, before ever allowing him to join him on missions.

2. Batman and Krypto do not get on. Batman thinks the superdog is ridiculous and often makes remarks about him and his owner, which always enrages Krypto. It's quite hypocritical considering Batman has his very own canine sidekick, called 'Ace the Bat-Hound'.

Krypto also didn't get on with Supergirl, at first.

1. Demented Superman clone and villain, Bizarro, has his own version of Krypto.
