Who was the first ever character to hold the torch for Marvel?
Marvel's precursor was Timely Comics, founded way back in 1939 by Martin Goodman. Their first comic book was Marvel Comics No.1 (cover dated October 1939), which featured several superhero characters listed on the front cover: The Human Torch; Sub-Mariner; Masked Raider; Ka-Zar the Great.
The first of these to appear was the Human Torch, created by writer-artist Carl Burgos, not to be confused with Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four.
This era was later considered to be their 'Golden Age', in which the likes of Captain America first appeared.
