Thor: Love and Thunder trailer breakdown

Full breakdown of the new trailer to Thor 4

The trailer for new film Thor: Love and Thunder was released on April 18 and it was instantly a huge hit with Marvel film fans. The brief footage caused a big buzz because it revealed many things about the latest journey in the god of thunder’s life.

Here is a full breakdown of hidden clues within the 90-second teaser of the film due out this July:

The trailer begins with a young Thor running at speed through his adolescence, showing his growth during childhood; starting as a young boy, then turning into a teenager wearing the classic costume from the comics, merging into his Avengers uniform as a man, ending with his unworthy form when he wielded Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker), all the while talking about his hands once being used for battle but are now made for peace.

Fans are then treated to the first look at Yggdrasil the world tree, where Thor plants Stormbreaker into the ground, similarly to his adversary, Thanos, who once put his sword into the ground along with his armour, after he eliminated half the universe, then peacefully watched the sunset. Thor is seen mediating underneath Yggdrasil as the sen sets before him.

He says in the narrative of this early part of the trailer that he is looking to find his purpose, so he might be attempting to gain more knowledge or connecting to the Odin Force (currently the Thor force) as he did to defeat Gorr in the comics.

After saying he needs to figure out who he is, we see Thor working out, trying to lose his beer belly by grabbing two chains tied to the skeleton of a monster. We don’t know exactly who the monster is, but it might be Mangog, because it looks a lot like him. Mangog was a being with the rage of a billion souls, who was chained to Mjolnir and cast into the sun by Jane Foster in the Mighty Thor comics. It could also be Ymir, the father of the frost giants and god of the cold.

Then there's a scene featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy where we can visibly see their leader Peter Quill rolling his eyes at Thor when revealing himself in the middle of what appears to be a battle. This could be involving the Universal Church Of Truth, a cult that want to corrupt the universe, or it might be an army of the remaining law of Saakar. The Guardians' M-Class spaceship, the Milano, is then pictured flying away from the planet, leaving Thor and his sidekick Korg smiling and watching them leave the planet they are on.

We are then introduced to Thor's chariot, which is pulled by two flying goats called Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder.

Then it flicks to Olympus where there's some sort of a large ceremony involving Zeus, who is easily identifiable as he clutches a lightning rod, although the character isn’t that impactful in the comic books, but his son Hercules, on the other hand, is very present and has saved the multiverse from the Chaos King before. So, it looks like Olympus and it's god Zeus features in this film… and that is the perfect setting for Gorr to step in and have some gods to hunt down.

It turns then to a frosty scene, featuring a giant beast the size of a mountain called Faligar, who was a god killed by Gorr. This panel is ripped right from the pages of the comic "Thor God of Thunder  - the Godbutcher". The person who killed the beast in the comics was the villainous Thor enemy, Gorr The God Butcher. The most notable thing about this part is the look of concern on his face as he is clearly embarking upon some kind of dangerous mission, with Korg faithfully accompanying him.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are seen in full, albeit missing Gamora still, with Thor amongst them. This is a jokey part, and with funny characters such as Drax, Groot, Rocket, Mantis and Nebula, along with Playstation-loving, forgetful rebel Korg, there's bound to be some classic comical sections to enjoy.

The film is directed by Taiki Waititi, the person who plays Korg and previously directed Thor Ragnorok, so it is bound to be lighthearted and funny.

Valkyrie is seen sitting in a plush, decorated room, flanked by Meek, both wearing business suits, with a large table probably filled with leaders or politicians from Earth, likely there as a representative of New Asgard, and looking like her nonchalant, unaccountable self.

Finally, we get to see Jane Foster like never before! Thor's love interest has returned with Mjolnir even after Hela destroyed the famous, mystical hammer. During the middle of a battle at night, which looks set on Earth where Jane lives, the hammer flies past Thor and into Jane's hands, who is no longer a geeky astronomer but a full-on, uniformed superhero. Mjolnir shows all the cracks and scars from when Hela destroyed it in Ragnarok.

This may set the stage of a whole new storyline for 'The Mighty Thor', just like in the comics when Jane inherited Mjolnir after Thor was deemed unworthy for a while.

With everything displayed in the trailer, it’s only right to be excited. This just might be the best film of 2022, if done correctly.
