Who is Shuma-Gorath?
One-eyed Shuma-Gorath is an extra-dimensional being of omnipotent ability, older than time itself.
Shuma-Gorath goes under the different name of Gargantos in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie. Reportedly, there are copyright/ownership issues that prevent the MCU from using the name, Shuma-Gorath.
Shuma-Gorath created Quoggorth as a servant, who served him for hundreds of millions of years, until Quoggorth fancied himself more powerful than his master so rebelled against him. Although Shuma-Gorath couldn't destroy his powerful creation and former disciple, he imprisoned him inside a sunken sepulchre instead. Magneto from the X-Men later brought the sepulchre and the island on which it sat back to the surface to use as a base.
Ruler of hundreds of dimensions, Shuma-Gorath first came to Earth hundreds of millions of years ago and feasted upon the ape-men of the time.
It was in 1,000,000 BC that time-travelling sorcerer Sise-Neg banished Shuma-Gorath from Earth.
Shuma-Gorath returned and set himself up as a god on Earth again, but a new god, Crom, managed to imprison Shuma-Gorath within a mountain, using three iron-bound books, before being killed by incinerated by a blast of energy.
During the Hyborian Age, Conan and his companion Hobb arrived at Mount Crom on a mission, only for Shuma-Gorath to take control of Hobb's mind, forcing him to read from the iron-bound books and freeing him from his mountainous prison. Conan took up the books to use their power to resist the demon's attacks; Shuma-Gorath offered Conan immense power but he refused and threw the books from the mountaintop to the storm above, returning them to Crom, which sealed Shuma-Gorath in one of his home dimensions.
There's a cult in America, formed in 1804, that worships Shuma-Gorath.
Doctor Strange first fought against Shuma-Gorath within the Ancient One's mind. It was there that Shuma-Gorath plotted his return. Unable to stop the demon, Strange was forced to kill his mentor.
