12 Things you didn't know about Drax

Who is Marvel's Drax?

Ahead of the latest Thor 4 movie, due for release in July, here is a list of 12 interesting facts about one of the film's characters, Drax the Destroyer, from the Guardians of the Galaxy:

12. His name is Arthur Sampson Douglas

Drax the Destroyer used to be a human named Arthur Sampson Douglas, who played the saxophone. He was a real estate agent from California, but his life changed when he was driving through the Mojave Desert with his family and saw Thanos's spaceship land on Earth. His entire family were destroyed by 'The Mad Titan', wishing to keep his presence on Earth a secret, but Arthur's mind was saved by Kronos and placed inside a more powerful body, one capable of killing Thanos, which became his singular goal. Kronos basically saved Arthur to turn him into a weapon specifically to destroy Thanos. Fun fact is that Kronos - a scientist whose mind merged with the universe to become a powerful cosmic being - is actually Thanos's grandfather!

11. He is bright green

His character has been appearing in comic books for over 40 years! The first appearance was in Iron Man #55 in February 1973. His skin colour in the comics is bright green, not the duller grey seen in the MCU films. They changed this so that viewers could easily distinguish between Drax and Gamora, also so not to confuse fans with another green muscly hero... Hulk! One thing the film got right was that he was imprisoned once, on the prison ship Paibok, accused of murdering 200,000 Skrulls.

10. He is as heavy as the Hulk

At his largest, he weighed over 1,000lbs and was over 7ft tall. In his human form, as Arthur Douglas, he was just an average 5ft 9in, weighing 161lbs.

9. Drax could fly

In the comics, he could fly and shoot powerful beams from his hands. However during the course of his ongoing story, he lost those abilities, which was reflected in the films.

8. His daughter is Moondragon

Despite his entire family being wiped out, his daughter, Heather Douglas, actually survived too. She became the powerful telepath, Moondragon. Like her father was found and saved by Thanos's grandfather, she too was saved by Mentor, Thanos's father! As a character, Moondragon was unique in that she practised and worked hard to acquire powers to become a superhero, whereas most others inherited supernatural abilities in one way or another.

7. Drax was a member of the Infinity Watch

As well as being a member of the Guardians, Drax was also part of the Infinity Watch, a group led by Adam Warlock to protect the Infinity stones. Drax was given the power stone to protect, which he swallowed to keep safe.

6. He killed Thanos

He battled his nemesis Thanos many times. In his campaign to possess the Cosmic Cube; Drax, the Avengers, Moondragon and Captain Mar-Vell all destroyed Thanos together. The result of the victory left Drax wandering the through space lacking a reason for existence.

5. Drax blamed Captain Mar-Vell for his lack of reason for existence

Thanos was resurrected many times, but whenever he was vanquished, Drax would take his anger out on Captain Mar-Vell, blaming him for the loss of his reason for being in life. Adam Warlock onse turned Thanos to stone, but Drax assumed it was Mar-Vell and travelled to Earth to battle him. However, during their never-ending fight, they learned Thanos had returned, from ISAAC (the network computer which governs over Titan), so they teamed up once again but it was a trap and the pair went on an incredible adventure battling giant spiders, snakes, imposters and gods to save Earth and Titan from ISAAC. After that, Drax changed his mind about Mar-Vell, who had saved his life many times.

4. The Avengers killed Drax

Both the Avengers and his daughter, Moondragon, were responsible for Drax's death. The father and daughter were travelling through space together and came across a planet engaged in a civil war, so Moondragon used her telepathic powers to enforce tranquility upon the humanoid alien race to quell the conflict. She then set herself up as the world's goddess, to which Drax became fearful and sent a distress message to the Avengers. 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes' freed Drax from his daughter's spell, but she forced his life essence to vacate his body, which was placed inside Sensia which exploded in space.

3. Drax once fought with the Hulk during a temper tantrum

When Thanos was resurrected by Mistress Death, so too was Drax by his original creator, Kronos. Drax would spend time on Monster Island doing playful things and Moondragon would visit to talk with him.She would ask questions about her past, which Drax didn't know he answers to. One day, one of his daughter's questions triggered the memory of his death, which caused him to go on a rampage in Nevada. There, he crossed paths with the Hulk and fought with him before returning back home again.

2. Drax joined the Guardians of the Galaxy then immediately left

Drax didn't join the Guardians until long after he had been a member of the Watch. He joined the GOTG after they had been newly-formed by Star-Lord, along with Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon, Mantis and Gamora. After a brief run-in with the Skrulls, Drax learned that Star-Lord had used Mantis to tamper with their minds in order to form the team, which led them to instantly break up and go their separate ways.

1. Thanos killed Drax, so Star-Lord killed Thanos

Even though Drax and his fellow Guardians were working with a newly-resurrected Thanos to stop the Cancerverse's invasion, Drax failed in an attempt to kill his greatest enemy and was killed by Thanos himself. Trapped in the Cancerverse, fighting over the Cosmic Cube, Star-Lord killed Thanos with it, who quickly reappeared and killed Star-Lord from behind. Drax then returned from death, discovering it was impossible to die in the Cancerverse, as one would merely respawn.

Bonus Fact: Drax is good friends with Iron Man! A particular battle with Thanos led Drax to befriend Iron Man and they remained close allies ever since. Once, Tony Stark even joined the Guardians of the Galaxy team, equipped with a new space suit.
