5 Facts you didn't know about Gargantos

Who is Gargantos?

Gargantos is a sea-monster under the command of King Naga, from Lemuria, a submarine continent in the Pacific Ocean. Naga is an enemy of Atlantean King Namor.

The green, one-eyed sea-monster comes from Earth-616.

Gargantos is not to be confused with Shuma-Gorath, who appears in the Dr. Strange 2 movie in the exact design of Shuma-Gorath, but under the different name of Gargantos. Confusing much? It's said there are copyright/ownership issues that prevent the MCU from using the name, Shuma-Gorath.

Gargantos has only ever appeared in a couple of comic books. The first was 'Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner #13', published in February 1969 and titled 'Death, Thou Shalt Die!'. The writers were Roy Thomas and Marie Severin, and the editor of the comic was Stan Lee.

In the comics, Naga challenged Namor, unleashing Gargantos in the process. However, Namor forced Naga to defeat the sea-monster himself. Then, it is revealed that Naga had killed Karthon's sister, Llyna, who becomes enraged and kills Naga in revenge, leading his people of Lemuria into an era of peace. Karthon was the leader of the Questers, a group formed by Naga to find the lost Serpent Crown which would have restored Naga's immortality, but instead is now deceased.

Bonus Fact: Despite being defeated in the last appearance, Gargantos is alive and well.
