Who is Marvel's Kamala Khan?
10. She is a Muslim
Kamala Khan is a Muslim Pakistani-American from New Jersey. She is the daughter of Yusuf and Muneeba Khan, and has a brother, Aamir Khan. Originally, the family is from Karachi, Pakistan. Her best friend is Nakia Bhadir, who she met in kindergarten. She also has a close friend called Bruno Carrelli from her childhood, who became a love interest later in life.
9. She gained her powers from a Terrigen Bomb
After being exposed to the Terrigen Mist activated by the Terrigen Bomb, she became a polymorph with the ability to stretch her body in any way imaginable. Kamala was on her way home through Jersey City one night when a blanket of Terrigen mist smothered her. She became unconscious in a Terrigen cocoon and had an unusual vision of her three favourite heroes, and when she emerged from her Terrigenesis, she was shocked to find that she had been transformed into a younger Carol Danvers in her Ms. Marvel uniform.
8. Kamala is a superhero super fan
Kamala was a huge fan of superheroes, especially of Carol Danvers. Her three favourite heroes were Captain Marvel, Captain America and Iron Man.
She even used to write fan fiction under the pen name 'SlothBaby'. She wrote about the Avengers, Captain Marvel, Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops and Emma Frost, amongst others.
7. She was shot during an armed robbery
She had already used her powers once to save her bully, Zoe Zimmer, from drowning, but the second time was when she encountered an armed robbery in progress and jumped into action to stop it, but was shot during the process. It was then that she discovered a second power - that she could heal from her injuries by simply shifting back into her true form.
6. The Inventor is one of her greatest enemies
Kamala swore to protect Jersey from the Inventor, who attacked Ms. Marvel several times, once sending a robot to her school and ended up destroying half of the building. She once teamed up with Wolverine to defeat the Inventor, the pair having to fight a congregation of alligators together in the sewers.
5. She had a pet dog that could teleport
Lockjaw is a member of the animal hero team, Pet Avengers. Medusa sent Lockjaw to help Kamala and keep an eye on her. She took a shine to Lockjaw and brought him home, and often used his teleporting abilities to fight crime.
4. Ms. Marvel joined the Avengers
When battling a monster one day, she was joined and helped by Nova, who was instantly smitten with her. After defeating the monster together, Kamala rejected Nova's attempts at flirting and they parted ways. But they met again when facing the space alien Warbinger at the Liberty Science Centre, then they were surprisingly joined by Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Vision and Thor. Tony Stark was so impressed with Kamala, he immediately asked her to join their team, which she readily accepted.
3. Her closest allies became Spider-Man and Nova
This trio were very close in age and often teamed up to fight evil together. They saved Madison Square Garden together once, after a pocket-sized nuclear power generator exploded. They formed a new group after quitting the Avengers, called the Champions, which also included the New Hulk, Amadeus Cho; Vision's daughter, Vivian; and Cyclops. Kamala was unaware that both friends, Spider-Man and Nova, harboured feelings for her.
2. She was there when Bruce Banner was killed
During a peaceful volunteer mission to ensure that Bruce Banner was definitely cured of his altar-ego, the Hulk, things went wrong when Hawkeye shot and killed Banner. Ms. Marvel was so shocked and horrified at this that she began to question her fellow Avengers. Both Spider-Man and Nova were there to comfort her.
1. The was a law passed in her name to outlaw underage superheroes
One day at school, Kamala witnessed Roxxon's Asgardian Dragon wreaking havoc, so she assembled the Champions to destroy it, but Viv went haywire and exploded destroying Kamala's entire school and seriously injuring several students. Because of this tragedy, a Senator passed the Underage Superhuman Welfare Act, which was called 'Kamala's Law', to outlaw any individual under the age of 21 from operating as a superhero unless with an adult superhero. Kamala was outraged that her name was being used to prevent people like her from heroism.
Bonus Fact: Kamala's name in Arabic means 'perfection', which her parents gave to her because they believed they couldn't conceive another child.
Extra Bonus Fact: Peter Parker once taught Kamala how to use his web-shooters and how to web-sling when they switched bodies briefly.
