Who is Baron Karl Amadeus Mordo?

Ahead of the newest Marvel offering, Doctor Strange 2: In the Multiverse of Madness, here is a list of 10 interesting facts about one of the film's main characters and antagonists, Baron Mordo.

10. Seeking revenge on the Allied Forces after World War 1, Baron Nikolai Mordo of Transylvania became a skilled magician with the help of Miarka, the Witch Queen of the Romani. But local rival, Krowler, became jealous and wanted to steal Nikolai's powers for himself, however a transference spell could only work on a member of his bloodline, so the schemer sent his daughter, Sara, to marry Nikolai, and she soon gave birth to a son, nine months after the wedding - Karl Amadeus Mordo.  

9. Karl's childhood was a lonely one. He was often ignored by his mother, who resented him for her father's evil plans, and Karl's father was always too busy for him pursuing his goals of supremacy. But his life took a sudden turn when his mother was ordered to kill his father by his grandfather, Krowler. The moved from their castle in Varf Mandra, Transylvania, back to Bavaria where Krowler taught his intelligent grandson in the ways of black magic. He learned of father's murder shortly before Krowler sent Mordo to Tibet in 1930 to find the Ancient One.

8. During his tutelage, he discovered scrolls about an entity called Dread Dormammu, although he was ordered by the Ancient One not seek him, contact him or even speak his name again. But in 1943, he defied his mentor and summoned Dormammu but through the power of the transference spell the evil entity possessed Krowler's body and left his mind and body destroyed. Mordo returned to Bavaria to capture his mother and grandfather to sacrifice them to Dormammu. 

The Ancient One learned of his student's deceit and resolved to train a sorcerer of great power to stand against Mordo one day. Decades later, Stephen Strange arrived in Tibet, seeking the Ancient One.

7. Mordo was immediately resentful of Doctor Strange, who discovered a plot of his to overthrow the Ancient One, so he left and Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme. The pair battled many times over the years, but Strange was always too strong for him.

6. Mordo once stole Strange's body when in the Astral Plane and put it on display in a wax museum, but Strange battled his way back to trap Mordo there instead, so placed his body on display in the wax museum instead.

5. He was once able to impersonate Doctor Strange when he stole his identity. Strange attacked his imposter to find out it was his mortal enemy, Mordo.

4. When Mordo did eventually defeat Doctor Strange, he then turned his attention to Morgana, who he was just about to kill until her cat attacked him. Unknown to Baron Mordo, the cat was possessed by the astral form of Strange who unleashed the full force of his power to defeat Mordo and restore everything back to normal. However, that poor cat was killed by Mordo, who tooj the feline's place so sneak into Stange's sanctum to attack Clea and Wong before teleporting away with Morgana and Clea as his prisoners.

3. His grandfather returned when a spell he cast on Mordo as a young boy to send all his mystical knowledge back to the past worked in his favour when he travelled back in time. Krowler overpowered Mordo and became second in power to Adolf Hitler!

2. Mordo was recruited in Mephisto's Legion Accursed, a team full of super-villains formed to battle the Beyonder.

1. Mordo discovered he had cancer and desperately tried to find a cure, but when his many attempts failed, he returned to Tibet to seek forgiveness from everyone, including his archenemy Strange. He was forgiven and died at peace.

Bonus Fact: Mordo is a skilled martial artist, trained by Tibetan monks in Kamar Taj, China.
